We arrived on Thursday night and the city was located in hills by the port. Here is the Alcazaba fortress on the hill lite up at night.
The next morning, Lee and I did a walking tour while we were waiting for Rebecca to fly in from London. The town is absolutely adorable and does not look as run down as other parts of Spain that I have seen. We were told that the Mayor was up for re-election and he was pumping lots of money into the town to win votes. As we walked around there seemed to be a church every 50 meters.
The streets were lined with little shops.
Here is one of the major shopping strips in town. Our hotel was right around the corner.
Also in town, there is Roman Theatre that was not discovered until 1951. We were told by our tour guide that the town library use to sit on top of it before they knew it was there.
There was lots of construction going on. I thought this facade was nice around a building.
A poster around town.
More churches.
While we were there, they were getting ready for Easter which is one of the biggest holidays in Malaga. We were told that the city is packed with processions where hundreds of locals (dressed in outfits that look like KKK) carrying the effigies of Christ through the streets to the sound of drums.
Strangely, when we were there, there seemed to be a run through for one group.
The absolute highlight of the walking tour was heading to the local market.
We were allowed to sample many different things and everything tasted so fresh and good.
All the fish had been caught that morning. Nothing was frozen.
The best part was the strawberries! I bought a kilo the first day and another kilo on Saturday. Absolutely amazing.
We also walked through the Malaga Park. The park was constructed in 1897 and runs along the shipping port. It was really nice to sit down on a bench and watch the parrots flying around.
There were also many strange trees that I had never seen. What is this?
It was beautiful.
I think this is some type of fig tree.
On Saturday, we visited the Cathedral which was started in 1528.
It is absolutely stunning inside.
Carved chairs inside.
Since when did they get rid of wax candles? This was a coin operated candle box.
We also visited the Alcazaba that sits on the hill overlooking the city of Malaga. It is a Moorish fortress that was constructed in the 8th century and then completely rebuilt in the 11 century. It has very unique architecture.
As we started to walk up the hill, I thought these signs were funny.
The walkways under the towers were beautiful.
Here I am in one of the garden areas.
Once at the top you could look at over the port.
There was spring water at the top that ran through out the fortress.
Lovely fountains.
Beautiful arches.
One of the ceilings.
Lee standing in one of the walkways.
It was a really neat place and one of the highlights of the trip.
Overall, we had a wonderful time in Malaga!
